CAYR Community Connections and the Teresa Group Announcement

MEDIA RELEASE

York Region, ON – January 28, 2022: On Friday, local MPP for Newmarket-Aurora, Christine Elliott and MPP for Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill, Michael Parsa, met virtually with representatives from Community Connections and the Teresa Group, who collaborated to deliver an empowering Peer Support program for mothers living with HIV and their Mom’s Group. In 2020, the groups received a $45,300 Seed grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation to help pilot the program.

“For years, CAYR Community Connections has created safe and inclusive spaces for members of our York Region community to access the specialized services and care they need,” said Christine Elliott, MPP for Newmarket—Aurora. “This funding provided through the Ontario Trillium Foundation has helped CAYR to build programs that connect and empower pregnant women and mothers living with HIV, ensuring they have the support they need.”

Over the past year, CAYR Community Connections and the Teresa Group joined forces to expand a model of peer support for pregnant women and moms living with HIV in York Region. The Mom’s Group gives mothers with young children an opportunity to come together to navigate the challenges and joys of being a parent. Funds from the grant were used to help with staffing, consulting assistance, as well as administrative, program supplies and workshop costs too.

The Mom’s Group offers a space to reduce social isolation and stigma faced by moms living with HIV. It provides a chance to create connections, share challenges, access opportunities, and build skills, together.

“This group has been a blessing in my life,” said one of the moms. “It has been a great support not only with the practical things they offer us, but emotionally it has been a help to know and share with other moms in the same situation.”

In addition to social support, CAYR provides practical support as well as delivery of Good Food Boxes of fresh food, support of back-to-school needs, and more. With technical guidance and referral support from The Teresa Group, CAYR is empowering women to become and raise strong leaders who will fight the stigma surrounding HIV.
